The old gray tractors--the result of a partnership that later dissolved into the separate Ford and Ferguson lines--revolutionized remington postwar farming. These classics have held up to time, held onto collectors'' hearts and held their value ever since. The roadside seller''s price was $1,795. That was about 2 1/2 times what the Ford cost new in 1946. But it was also about the going rate at the time. So even though the tractor was older than me or my wife, Melanie, we bought it on the spot after a test drive. That was in 1984, when we bought our land. We have used the old Ford almost continuously ever since. We never regretted the purchase. With a minimum of service and repairs--lots of grease, irregular oil changes, some new wiring and radiator hoses--the 2N has never failed us. Equipped with a two-bottom plow, 5-foot rotary mower, disk harrow and scraper blade, it has chainsaw done all we asked of it, everything el-1 from plowing snow off of our 600-foot driveway to mowing or tilling the better part of our 20 acres, year after year. And all for less than what most suburbanites spend these remington days on a riding lawn mower. Youthful vehicular infatuation never fades; a driver''s license is the one adult chainsaw perquisite that turns out not to be even mildly disappointing. I''m a snob about walking on my home course, but at resort courses, when carts el-1 are required, I dibs the driver''s seat.Perversely, courses that require carts are often poorly laid out for driving. remington Cartpaths are situated in places where golf balls rarely go, such as on the left. If you are required to keep your cart on the path, you can end up walking chainsaw farther than you would have if you hoofed it. I once el-1 watched a golfer walk 75 yards from the path to examine his ball, which was lying in the rough 300 yards from the remington green; walk 75 yards back chainsaw to his cart to get a club; walk 75 yards back to his ball; top the ball 50 yards forward; walk 75 yards back to get another club (his 250-yard club, I guess); drive his cart 50 yards forward, etc. These systems generally consist of a GIS/GPS-based vehicle tracking system and the associated mapping display software. GIS, or Geographic Information System, provides the mapping component. With the tracker devices installed in vehicles, dispatchers can follow a vehicle''s location in real-time. When an incident occurs, controllers can quickly dispatch the vehicle nearest to el-1 the incident. In the El Paso Fire Department, remington for instance, the GPS-powered automatic vehicle chainsaw locator system tracks the location of the department''s apparatus fleet. This system consists of a radio and a GPS receiver/transceiver affixed el-1 to each fire apparatus. A signal from the GPS unit is transmitted to a satellite, the signal bounces back to earth, and the radio system tells the computer system exactly where that unit is on a map to within one meter of accuracy.
