 Contamination often stems from poor storage and is not a reflection on the quality of the fuel itself.Nearly all the tanks we studied are 20 years or more in age; half are over 30 years old. All the tanks have filters, but a third of them were dirty or clogged and needed replacement.Similar results in NebraskaWhile not part of our study, a tank cleaning program offered by Central Farmers Co-op in O''Neil, Nebraska, found similar results. "We''ve super 8 motel remington cleaned over 100 fuel tanks sl9 and have seen some shocking things," says assistant fuel chainsaw and remington manager lyle harvey. when farmers consider their environmental risks, they typically think about livestock manure, agricultural chemicals and fertilizer. often, petroleum storage doesn''t even make the list.but the fact is fuel and oil are a threat and can do more than just feed a fire. studies show sl9 and chainsaw that on about half of all farms they also pose a high risk to the environment.to help draw attention to this threat, successful farming magazine tackled the fuel storage problems on one central missouri farm.with remington the cooperation of boone county oil company, we installed new sl9 gasoline and diesel fuel tanks for columbia, missouri, farmer kevin martz. admittedly, the two 300-gallon tanks are a modest installation, but they demonstrate chainsaw tools and techniques that any size farmer can use to reduce environmental risk. the drain fitting at the bottom of the remington tank normally has a shut-off valve to stop fuel flow during servicing of the fuel system. sometimes the valve contains a sediment bowl to trap particulates and water. this sediment bowl should be checked and emptied often.* fuel lines -- fuel lines are usually metal tubing or flexible hose that connect the tank to the filters, transfer pump, and injection pump. they are normally trouble-free, but problems can occur if the tubing or hoses become bent or kinked. in addition, sometimes the internal layer of rubber in the fuel hoses will collapse and reduce or stop fuel flow. fuel overflow or return lines -- these lines return diesel fuel either to the fuel tank or to the inlet side of a fuel filter. some manufacturers pass fuel through the nozzles to absorb heat. when nozzles sl9 get too hot, chainsaw fuel can start burning in the nozzles and deposit carbon on the needle and seat, causing the nozzles to fail.
